2. Palace of Knossos

Its complex layout included long narrow basement rooms which served as storage magazines for wheat, oil and treasures. It also had long corridors connecting the various buildings. The central court had administrative and ceremonial quarters on the west side, with a throne room that still contains the gypsum chair used by the kings of Knossos.
The entire palace resembled a labyrinth and many believe it was linked to the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. 3. Koules Fortress
There’s a lot to see on the Greek island of Crete, but Koules Fortress is one of the most iconic sights in Heraklion. This Venetian fortress is at the entrance of Heraklion’s old port and many history lovers come here to take a tour and learn about its rich history.
The construction of Koules began in the early 16th century and was completed by 1540. It was designed on a natural rocky outcrop in the harbour of Heraklion. The fortress is formed from two sections, a rectangular and a semi-elliptical section. It has 26 chambers on the ground level. The fortress also features three marble compositions with the Winged Lion, which is a symbol of Saint Mark.

4. Diktaion Andron
The Psychro Cave, also known as Diktaion Andron is an impressive site and one of the most famous caves in Crete. It is situated in the Lassithi plateau and near the village of Psychro.
It is a cult center that has been in use since the Neolithic period. The excavations have uncovered many findings such as Neolithic tools and weapons, votive offerings, pottery art and jewelry. They have also uncovered an altar as well as the foundations of a table that were used to serve food and wine offerings.
This cave is said to be the birthplace of the god Zeus and was dedicated to his worship in antiquity. It is rich in stalactites and stalagmites and its whole atmosphere is breathtaking.
There are two trails that lead to the entrance of the cave. You can choose the ancient one that is a bit rougher or you can go through the newer path which is more accessible. The hike to the entrance takes about 20 minutes.
At the entrance of the cave you can find a small kiosk where you can buy tickets and refreshments. There are also taverns and small souvenir shops in the surrounding area.
The cave is also referred to as the "Cave of the Zeus" and it is a must-visit if you want to experience the wonders of Crete. It is a place of great importance, not only for its natural beauty but because it holds an important role in Greek mythology as well.
The cave is open to the public and there is a large parking lot. Its entrance is surrounded by stone stairs and the cave is walkable.
5. Balos Beach
Hands down one of the most beautiful and exotic beaches in Europe, Balos Beach is a definite must see during your Crete holiday. The white sand and turquoise waters of the lagoon make this a truly magical place to relax.
